BURTON CONSTABLE HALL

HOME OF BURTON CONSTABLE COMPANY OF BOWMEN

SANS MAL DESIR

The title of Lord Paramount of Holderness was instituted by Wm the Conquerer. He was expected to provide 350 Archers whenever William required. The Archers were also used to gather taxes.

In the 17th Century Charles 2nd made the title hereditary and granted it to John Constable. It has been held by the family ever since.

The current Lord Paramount is John Chichester Constable who is the Burton Constable Company of Bowman's Warden.

The building of Burton Constable Hall was started in the reign of Queen Elizabeth 1 and has been occupied by the Constable family for over 400 years.

Although the Hall is now run by the Burton Constable Foundation as a Country House Museum, part of the Hall is John Chichester Constables’ residence.

Archers have been part of Burton Constable since it was built, although the current Company of Bowmen have only been in existence since 1964

The Burton Constable grounds in which we shoot are part of a 300 acre site landscaped by ‘Capability Brown’ in the 1770’s
